Other People’s Pictures

Some seem to think that a camera gets in the way of the “authenticity” of a moment.
I’ve always thought that it’s precisely because there’s a camera- and by extension a photo taken- that, rather than ruined, a moment is made.

There’s something to the absurdity and delight found in the spectacle of people photographing that has, for the past twenty years and counting, kept me taking other people’s pictures.

「カメラ」は純粋に過ぎてゆく瞬間を壊してしまうと考える人がいるらしい。
その一方、私はカメラがあるからこそ「瞬間」が現れると思っています。つまり、カメラはリアリティに対して障害というより、世界や時間を感じさせるものだと信じている。

人々が写真を撮る光景に見られる不条理や喜びが、過去20年に渡って私が他人の写真を取り続けてきた理由である。
