「家族」とは何かと考えてみると最初に思い浮かぶのは夫婦もしくは父母だ。すなわち異なる二つ

の性別の人間が出会いますます大きな共同体を作り上げること。あるいは血縁により繋がれた集団

に至ることが家族であろう。しかしこのような血縁関係の形はそれを包括する巨大な集団〈社会〉

により違う気質や特性を見せる。

韓国人にとって「（韓国の）家族」の代表的な特性をあげるとしたら、まずは「家父長的」もしく

は「儒教的」という単語を浮かべるだろう。韓国は代々大家族の形態（少なくとも３世代以上が一

つの家で暮らす形）をもっとも望ましく見習うべき家族像として思ってきた。その理由は明確であ

る。一族の家長がすなわち人生の指標であり、充実した教科書であるためだ。夫婦が父母になり、

その父母がまた祖父母に移っていく過程こそが教育であり、共に生きる社会の姿であるのだ。しか

しこのような伝統的な家族の姿は決して普遍ではない。社会の風習は時代別環境に影響を受け、人

間関係は同世代に影響される。家庭の消費規模は国家の経済規模に影響されついには完全な自分の

家庭のことは残らなくなる。このような過程の繰り返しは家族の間の葛藤や不和を起こしたり、よ

り強い結束力を持ったりもする。

家に家族が多く集まることがいつも楽しいことだとは限らない。属する人が多いということはそれ

だけ多くの規律と役割が決まることにもなる。毎年の節句に女性は台所に閉じ込められたかのよう

に料理をし、男性はよく覚えてもいない親戚の人々の機嫌を伺うために歩き回る。子供達は一定の

場所で望んでない時間を過ごさざるを得ないことが当たり前となる。

しかしこのようなことが韓国人にとって真率な家族の意味になるのか。一年のうちに１、２回ほど

のイベントに過ぎなく日常を暮らす上でさほどの影響を及ぼすことはないだろう。しかし、だから

と言ってこのような家族の中の行事を価値のないことと片付けてしまってよいのだろうか？。

「Family Project」の作品で私は社会的現状より家族が互いに共感を得ていこうとする短編的な姿に

注目した。歳をとった夫婦が同じ家で寝て食べて話をし、共に痛みを分かち合いながら愛し合うも

のである。これらの写真は韓国でよく目にする家庭の姿を表しているというよりは、既成世代の夫

婦の日常に光を当てたものだ。これは世代間の格差とは別に、家族の文化を作り上げるのに最もの

役割を果たすのが夫婦であることを強調したかったからである。

夫婦あるいは父母の日常を根掘り葉掘りと赤裸々に記録し表すことで、この作品を見る観客に自分

の家族と一緒に過ごす日常を自然に思い浮かばせたかった。それから家族と一緒に過ごす人生、互

いとの関係を結ぶということがが何を意味するかを改めて問いかけ、今日の家族解体と崩壊の現像

を復元すべき価値と認識してくれることを望むのである。
